Well I have to say I am a little stumped on this one. :( I have a 10 SI Delco alternator on my 580 Case backhoe (I know NOT I.H.,but its in the "family" :) SAME hook up as many: The "BATT" terminal is coming straight from the battery, the #2 terminal on the voltage reg is coming right from the "BATT" terminal and it seems as I have traced back to the key switch, the #1 terminal hooks to the "ACCESORY" terminal on the key switch to "trigger/excite"the alternator.
OK,NOW for what the problem is: When I start the tractor, the "alternator" idiot light is glowing on the dash panel. The alternator is putting out SOME,but not fully charging.(I DO NOT have a voltage reading at the battery ,but the magnetic pull on the bearing at the back of the case is SLIGHT pull on my screwdriver.) When I stick a test light into the #1 wire terminal at the alternator with it UNPLUGGED ,the test light glows BRIGHT. When I probe the #1 wire at the alternator with it PLUGGED IN,it glows VERY DIM.
If I take a jumper wire from the "BATT" terminal to the #1 terminal on the voltage regulator, the alternator idiot light goes out and I can tell it is goes back to fully charging the battery. It "sparks" when I touch the jumper wire from the "BATT" terminal to #1 and the magnetic pull on my screwdriver is STRONG!! SORRY,no voltage readings. :(
