valve lash must be kept adjusted periodically, as in a major tune -up. too much clearance will damage pushrods and rockers. worn out lifters and cam lobes causer this. best to pull the lifters and have a look at the bottoms. they must be convex not concave. meaning the center of the lifter has to be higher than the edges. this creates the lifter to spin reducing wear. any engine that has prolonged idling will have valve train wear. idling at slow rpm is the worst thing for an engine.
