Dead H...I know that rebuilding the carb yourself seems like a daunting task, but it really isn't that hard. The hardest thing for me was getting the thing clean...the first carb I did was for a Cub and they are notoriously finicky, but I did it and it works fine. As you can tell from some of my posts, I'm not expert mechanic. The H is much larger and not as finicky. If you can disassemble it without breaking anything, changing out the parts is easy. The symptoms you describe indicate to me fuel starvation. And to compensate, it sounds to me like someone adjusted it very rich. That would explain why it would start without choke and run with dark smoke (running rich). Once the fuel from the float bowl is used, it dies. While the engine is not running, fuel seeps back into the bowl...then you can start it again.... Thats my story and I'm sticking to it...Best of luck...BB
