: would anyone know if a 200 Farmall is negative
: or positive ground system. Have rebuilt the gen
: erator, replaced the voltage regulator, ampmeter
: battery cables, and battery. It will still not charge
: any help would be greatly appreciated.

Bob, It's positive ground. Get your lights working, turn them on and see that the meter shows a discharge with the tractor not running. This will tell you that the wire configuration is correct. Start the tractor, if no charge connect a lead from the field terminal of the generator to a good ground. If the meter doesn't move in the right direction in a few seconds, something is wrong. Either the generator is not producing or the points in the regulator are not closing. If the generator is producing but the points are not closing, you run the risk of burning up the generator. Are you sure that the voltage regulator is correct for a 6 volt system? If all the above fail, with the tractor running, remove the cover from the regulator. Push the points on the GEN side closed and see if the meter moves in the right direction. Also see if the points stay closed after you physically close them. If the generator is good, the voltage regulator is grounded well and the wiring is right, the physical encouragement may do the trick. If it does, just make sure the points open by themselves when the trqctor is shut off lest the generator drain the battery of it's reserves. I can do this in my sleep. If you have no luck with this message, give me a call.

Today's Featured Article - Gatherin of the Orange - by Rick Nikolich. In July of 1998 I was talking to fellow Allis Chalmers collector Mike Schilling about the annual "Gathering of The Orange" AC show coming up in August of 1999. He got this wild idea that we should get a convoy of AC tractors and drive them from Charlotte, Michigan 105 miles to LaGrange, Indiana. ... [Read Article]
