Being a virgin to diesel motors, I've got a rebuilt Bosch PSB pump (what does PSB stand for??) to go in this Cockshutt 570 Diesel. The pump that's in there now is leaking and the motor doesn't have the power it should. So I've checked out the manual and it says that when the flywheel is timed to it's timing mark (26 deg btdc), then the Camshaft gear's timing mark should mesh with the timing mark on the pump gear. This certainly makes sense to me and I think this probably applies to most brands of tractors and pumps. So I reason that as I'm taking out the old pump, I'll get the flywheel timed properly first and check out how the cam and pump gears mesh up. So I've got the flywheel timed at 26 deg btdc and when I remove the pump gear cover, the pump's timing mark is 11 teeth before the mesh (25 teeth on pump gear) and the camshaft's timing mark is 5 teeth before the mesh (50 teeth on cam gear). Something doesn't jive here!! Can a diesel engine even run by apparently being so far out of time?? When I install the newly rebuilt pump, do I install its pump timing mark 5 teeth before the mesh so that it will match up with the camshaft timing mark? HELP, this has me flummuxed!!
