: The tractor club I belong to is getting organized this year to include tractor pulling at some of our summer get togethers. The organizers have decided that only unmodified tractors will be allowed to pull at club events. I visited a friend on Friday at the machine shop where he works . While there he showed me the engine of a fellow club member's McCormick-Deering tractor that was being worked on . When I asked the extent of the work I was told that it was being bored , and the head was being shaved by .050 inches . When I asked if the head was out that much my friend said no, that it was being done so it will pull better. I watched as the head was set up and the initial cuts were made . The head cleaned up at about .010 inches but an additional .040 inches was removed. To those that know something about pulling , could you still consider the engine to be stock? Or, is this guy cheating ? Let's grow up men. As you know everybody likes to win. Some don't care how much money they have to spend to do it. There isn't anybody placing at tractor pulls in any Div. with stock tractors. There may be some w/ stock appearing tractors. Personnelly, as low at the compression ratio is on a Deering do you really think .050 is going to make that much difference? Many peoples philosophy is "I don't care how much he's cheating just so he's not cheating more than I'm cheating." Back to the cylinder head milling. If your cheater would have read Smokey Yunick he would have known the better place to gain compression is with better piston. Removing unnecessary material from the head weakens it to the point were it can cause a permature failure. So maybe the guy will get what he bargained for.
