I finally got a chance to sit down with grandpa again today, and I brought up the trencher again. He said he can't find where he had that stuff wrote down still...
BUT..
My uncle was there, and he says to the best he can recall, theirs had a 226 flat head Continental in it.. He also believes it used the same oil filter as was found on 44-6 Massey Harris tractors originally, but at some point, they had converted theirs to a more modern and convenient spin on filter.

He asked if you were repairing one, or did you just happen to get a power unit from one? He thought it'd be pretty neat if someone was rebuilding one, even though they're outdated, they were pretty neat machines in their days he says..
Hope this helps, and if you have other questions, I can try to get answers.. Some times it just takes a while
