I wouldn't be worried about the roof capacity. What I want to know is how the heck was it strapped down? I can't see any "beefy" straps and with that long of a load, it must have been a real nail-biter driving it, not to mention the danger he put everyone in that was on the road with him. A cop would/should have stopped him in a heartbeat. Making any kind of turn, even at slow speed would have been interesting.
Every week, the night before garbage pickup, I see people trolling our subdivision, looking for scrap. Some in pickups, vans or with trailers but also people loading bbq's, old swing sets, etc into the trunks of their cars. I just shake my head. For the few pennies they get on that stuff, I can't believe it pays for the gas, wear/tear on their vehicles, their time and the risk they're taking.
I think scrap is in the couple hundred $$$ per ton range, so an old bbq that weighs maybe 25 lbs. will bring what? $2.00? That's half a gallon of gas or so. At 20 mpg, that's 10 miles. Driving through the streets of our sub is well over a 5 mile trip. (Scratching my head)
