Not all RR ties. We've been using them for corners, corral posts, etc., here on the ranch for about 15+ years now. We buy 'em by the semiload and some are good and some are barely usable for landscaping(usually those are in the middle of the bundle). Can't count how many I've had to replace due to rotting off or snapping off if someone bumps them with an implement or cattle rub on them.
By the same token, we have some old hedge posts that've been in the ground for 70 years or better that are still solid as the day they were set.
One other good thing about the hedge posts is they usually taper out towards the bottom and will stay in the ground alot better versus a straight-sided RR tie which needs to be very well braced if used for a corner.
I've never bought a used fencepost but I've re-used lots of them from when we've moved fences, etc. to make repairs on other fences. I can't see a problem with putting a solid 30 year old post in a 50 year old fence.
