We used to spray field corn that size with 2-4D Amine using drops that kept the spray below the canopy of leaves. The spray should never get into the swirl or center of the plant. On a hot day we used 8oz. but the normal rate is 16oz. It's been a long time ago, but I think we used ten gallons or less of water per acre. It did make the corn brittle for a few days afterward and on rare occasions fields were snapped off in high winds.
Are you working with sweet corn? Sweet corn is more sensitive than field corn so you have to be extra careful not to get the spray on the corn plants. A couple of years ago I sprayed sweet corn with a hand sprayer below the canopy with a hand sprayer, like you plan to do, and it did make the corn sag and twist for awhile but in the end we had the best crop we had ever had. Spraying with a hand sprayer is not nearly as accurate rate-wise as using a big field sprayer so you have to be careful not to over-apply. Jim
