I used a home made line up tool. A steel dowel with electrical tape wrapped around it. The engine seemed to slide in without alot of effort. I know I didn't have to put a lot of pressure on the bolts to draw it in, it just got harder to turn the crank with every advance of the bolts. Should I pull it off and use a real alignment tool? I assumed if the shaft fir into the pilot bearing, any pressure would be releived when the clutch pedal was pushed in.:
: : I am in the middle of a rebuild on my '42 Farmall H and would like to know why the engine seems to get harder to turn over by hand as I tighten the engine mounting bolts. The clutch, pressure plate, throwout, and pilot bearings are new, and the flywheel has been resrufaced. When installing the block, the engine will turn freely, until the gap between the clutch housing, and the backer plate is about 1/16" apart. Then as I tighten the rail bolts, and the bolts from behind, I can feel the crank get harder to turn every time I give the bolts another turn. When the gap is completely closed, I can no longer turn the crank by hand. Thanks, for any help.

: You must have some kind of thrust problem. The input shaft of the transmission must not be going into the clutch easily enough or into the pilot bushing easily enough. Did you check these before you put the clutch together? Did you use a clutch aligning tool when you assembled the clutch?
: MM

Today's Featured Article - The 8N and the Fox - by Zane Sherman. Dec. 13 1998, Renfroe, Alabama. Last niht I dreamed about the day that I plowed the field of about 10 acres over on what Jimmy and Dandy called the Ledbetter field. I was driving the 1948 8N Ford tractor that Jimmy bought in 48 new This was prebably in about 1951 and maybe even befor the house was built. This would have made me to be about16 years old and I drove the tractor for nothing and would have paid to drive it if I had had any money which I didn't, but neit ... [Read Article]
