I see plenty of those what I consider outrageous suits in some of the legal publications I run across now n then, many get publicity but are eventually thrown out.
As far as setting a booby trap to protect private property, the law frowns on that to say the least, under the premise that personal property doesnt have as high of a value as human life, pretty much a no brainer. However when it comes to negligence, a landowner doesnt owe much if any "duty of care" to a trespasser other then he still cant set booby traps to protect personal property. Thats unlike the duty of care a business owes to a business invitee which is very HIGH since he is trying to get the customer in the store to get his money, its not hardly right to allow known hazards to exist in a place of business. And somewhere in the middle of those two extremes is the "duty of care" owed to a guest on ones property....
