"Military" never used the .38 special in combat prior to issuing the .45 ACP. Beginning in the late thirties the US Navy and USAAF began issuing Smith and Wesson 38's to aircrews. During the fifties and up to 1980 the 38 special was the USAF and USA aircrew issue sidearm. Many of the USN and USAF MP's had the Smith 38, a few had Colt M&P. The Navy issued me a lightweight S&W 5 shot pos in 1970 for combat flights. I tossed it in the bottom of a foot locker and bought a 4 inch barrel Python, and carried that on over 400 missions. And they certainly added it to their arsenal after 1911 buying several hunderd thousand of them.
