JD sad to say when I first enlisted in 74 I didn't think much about the politicians in DC. By the time I retired in 96 I had figured out that most of the brass I could trust but I had no faith in our politicians to use us wisely.
Old, you missed out on the draw down in the 90's. They called it the peace dividend. The active Army went from about 800,000 first to 450,000 then to 400,000. There were guys with 10-15 years of service that got a letter of reprimand when they were privates that got cut cause of that or maybe didn't get promoted quite fast enough. It was crazy. Once they got rid of anyone they had the least little thing on they started a buy out paying long term soldiers to get out. During the same time frame my BIL, US Navy got discharge because the Navy did away with his rating and made no offer to retrain into another job. The problem is that our politicians would rather buy votes with "entitlement" programs and imagration reform than support a strong military.
