Sounds like a faulty light switch to me. It has multiple positions: 1) ignition only 2) ignition + front lights 3) ignition + front lights + bright rear light 4) ignition + front lights + dim rear light Basically, the ignition wiper in the switch needs to make contact with the ignition track in all positions. The other tracks are shorter, given what they do. Usually, this symptom means that the ignition contact has oxidized in the other positions over the years, and will no longer function in any position but the first. It comes from all those years of running in the daylight! You can remove the switch and carefully open it up and remove the corrosion, or you can simply replace the switch unit. They're still available. Oh, try moving the switch throughout its' range several dozen times. If the oxidation is light enough, the wiping action may restore normal operation.
