First off, Lou's acronym "BUD" had one word wrong. It's Big ULTIMATE Dish :-) DirecTv and Dish have a "LSD", Little Silly Dish or a Pizza Pan :-)
We have had Dish at home since '98. My mother and FIL had DirecTv and we had switched to DirecTv on campus (my 6 beautiful BUDs were no longer used). So, I have experience with both LSD services. To notice a difference between DirecTv and Dish picture quality you would have to have them side by side and somebody with a critical eye to point any difference out. Both services experience "rain fade" when there is heavy rain between your dish and the satellite. At our location Dish gives us a warning and DirecTv lets us know somebody south of us is getting a storm. On campus I didn't deal with consumer level customer service, but I have here and mom's. I have experienced better customer service with Dish than I did DirecTv. If you compare package prices I believe you will find Dish is a better value. As Lou mentioned, watch out for DirecTv introductory price and what you'll be paying in a year. I believe Dish has more advanced technology, especially with their "Hopper and Joey".

He got this wild idea that we should get a convoy of AC tractors and drive them from Charlotte, Michigan 105 miles to LaGrange, Indiana.
