Don't know why not. Sand is granular, the spreader has an agitator, I doubt weight of the thing at double or even triple the weight of fertilizer would matter. Mine has a 500 decal on the side so I guess It holds 500# of fert/seed (10 50# bags). I have loaded 9 bags in it with a little room left at the top. At 3x the weight or even 5x the weight you are still well within the lifting capacity of a medium sized tractor.
On that spreader, and I think one company in Italy makes them for most everyone...forget the name for now, but the vanes are moveable. The hole you select determines the discharge pattern. As I recall, the first hole is for the right side discharge only and short width. As you move through the other 3 holes, the swath gets wider and if you want 180 degree coverage at 25' you have to be in the 4th hole.
