You are correct retired farmer. The ONLY reason wild cats have better repitations as mousers is because moma taught them to hunt while they were babies. If a person has the time and paticence,weaned kittens from the shelter or lazy moma can be taught to hunt. Right about weaning large bugs like grasshoppers without back legs and wings are fun for kittens. Pulling a rag or toy with meat attached on a fishing pole also gets them going. When the kitten is half grown,crippled mice you catch in traps is the final lesson. If a mouser has kittens,don't let the kids keep them in the house because women are funny about half dead mice and snakes brought into the house by moma cat.
While writing this it occurred to me that kids are about like kittens. If parents wait for hand outs rather than work to earn food,the kids turn out to be just like them.
Snakes are miles better at controling mice since they can go any where mice can. When there are no longer mice in the building , snakes will leave unless there are grown up fields to hunt nearby.
