Years ago most hospitals were city or county hospitals. The were run by doctors, not administrators. They treated you weather you had money and or insurance or not. In many cases wealthy people in the local area donated money to the hospitals to keep the doors open and to allow them to buy new equipment. At the end of the year the federal government would step in if needed and pay off any red ink. Then the news media started attacking subsidies, sure, the farm ones first. When they started to go after the medical ones business guys stepped in and told the government that if they could manage the hospitals they could make the profitable. Well the politicians bought off on that and pretty much gave them a free, unregulated hand. That's when cost started to spike.

In July of 1998 I was talking to fellow Allis Chalmers collector Mike Schilling about the annual "Gathering of The Orange" AC show coming up in August of 1999.
