: Realyzing that this opens a LARGE can of worms ( tractor parts?),what hazzards and fears should I have before lookin at : an old (probably mid- 1940's) International T-9 that I saw sitting in the middle of a field, missing the seat and probably more. : I currently own a vapor-locking I-9 with an American Tractor Company End-loader. Anyone know anything about the loader company?? The tractor S/N says : that It's a '46 Well, you said it correctly. It's a LARGE can of worms! Hope you have a big shop with heavy hoists in it. If it's been sitting, it sure won't be going anywhere under it's own power.... A crawler is completely different from a tractor from the transmission back. There's no differential. There are steering clutch packs on each side. There's a differentially applied braking system. The steering clutches interrupt drive power to the inside track and then apply a brake (in that order) to the inside track in a turn. Then, there are sprockets and chains that wear out in the tracks. The machine rides on a series of steel rollers mounted to the bottom of the track carriage. There's a front idler and adjustment mechanism at the front of the tracks. Finally, there's the track pads themselves. My guess is that you'll need to move the machine to your shop with it stone dead. Then, you'll have to remove the tracks. There are steel pins and bushings that most likely need replacing (at a track specialty shop - you'll need a way to lift, load and transport those heavy track assemblies). Then, you'll probably need to replace the bushings in the idlers and rollers. Finally, you'll probably need to rebuild the steering clutch packs and replace the brakes on both sides. These things are a lot more work to restore than a wheel tractor......
