I dismantled a command recently and payed particular attention to the parts as I dismantled it. In thinking about that subject it seemed to me that a horizontal cylinder configuration doesn't benefit from pushrod fed oiling like a vertical cylinder would due to the effects of gravity.
On the splashing comment, makes sense that being horizontal the splashed oil could just run down the rod to the lifter.
Mine had 300+ hours and did show some wear marks on the push rod guides at the top of the OHV casting, under the valve cover. Didn't seem to be hurting anything and were just surface scratches.
