Yep, we're lucky in that most haven't experienced a serious life setback through no fault of our own, as some have- but for the most part, we make our own luck, and if you keep puttin' one foot in front of the other and don't just give up, you can even overcome some problems along the way. There are some on here who haven't been dealt a very good hand, but by growing a good garden, doing a lot of canning, freezing, firewood cutting and so on, still seem to be able to provide for the basics and have a decent life.
I grew up on a subsistence dairy farm in the '50's. Mom was a great cook. Grandma and Grandpa came out for Sunday dinner every week, and I remember Grandma raving about how everything on the table was grown on our farm. After they left, Dad said "I've never thought of it that way- I just figgered we eat this way because we can't afford to buy anything."
The ones I feel sorry for are the city folk in apartments who have no chance to provide for themselves unless they can make money, which is very difficult if you're not educated and have not developed a work ethic. I'm not happy with the direction our country has moved, but not much I can do about it other than push my family in the right direction, which I'm happy to say I have done.
