I used to work at a lumberyard that had a hydro driven generator on the old dam. It provided all the power the place needed plus a lot more that was sold back to the local power supplier. I understood the plant was once a small towns only source of power. At any rate, many times I watched the chief millwright/welder/cabinetmaker/cranky-old-guy-who'd-been-there-forever stick a screw driver into the works to "adjust" something. IIRC this thing out out 600V right off the generator and God knows how many amps. Why that guy never fried is beyond me. Never turned the juice off to anything as far as I know.
