You can pre heat cast iron, and weld it with 7018 rod, or mig weld it. You need to weld a little bit, then peen the weld with the point of your chipping hammer, and repeat the process until you are done. The main thing afterwards is not to let it cool fast, that will make it crack. If you can put the piece into a enclosed grill that uses propane you can control the rate of cooling so it cools off. Just slowly turn down the heat, the slower you let it cool the better. I usually try to cool the piece of for about 24 hours afterwards, that's probably overkill on the cool down, but it works for me.
