: : A husband and wife team are moving from San Francisco to farm country in Maine and are now responsible for mowing 6 acres and plowing over 150 feet of drive. : : Looking for a tractor, mower, plow, and wagon. Do I need anything else. Any quality used equipment I should consider/avoid? HELP! : First, what part of Maine? Terrain and snowfall vary widely here in God's Country. You'll see a LOT more snow in Presque Isle than you will in Prospect Harbor. If you're gonna live in Big Snow country, ya might want to bear in mind that plowing snow on a tractor is C O L D!!! Do yourself a favor and either pay your neighbor to plow it, or get a 4WD truck and hang a plow off'n it. The cab heater and windshield defroster alone are worth the price of admission. As for what tractor, Terry Dixon (below) gives the best advice. I'll add one bit...I have NEVER seen the attraction to the little Fords (8N/2N/9N) They're "cute" so city-slickers flock to 'em, and us wise old country folk jack the price up to about 3 times what they're really worth. No live pto, limited hydraulics, darn little weight, and what there is is distributed badly, and geared too high for most of the country around heah. Just my opinion. Be glad to be more helpful on specific tractors if you want to get in touch via email. If you put a plow on a 4WD pickup, you might also find that you can pick up a few extra dollars by plowing your neighbors' drives as well to offset the cost.
