The coldest temps in NC should not be a problem for the normal ATF used in the older Western systems. Rarely, but it does happen that we get a super cold front of maybe -20 F blowing in right after a snowfall needing plowing. We usually plug in electric heaters to enable the engines to start, but the tranny, power steering, and power brakes (on the diesel) sure are sluggish. This has been helped somewhat by the newer ATFs being a synthetic oil base. The Western pumps of the 1960s and 70s did not have that advantage, but many blades of that era did not have power turn cylinders, so there was much less pump run time. My first plow truck was a 63 IH with a lift only plow, and a 37 amp Delco alternator running the Western system of that era. Nobody had big alternators at that time. So when the headlights were getting dim, you just stopped plowing for a bit, drank some hot coffee from the thermos, letting the alternator recharge the battery, and then continue back to work.
