Thank you for your comments and sorry for taking so long to respond - for some reason I thought I'd be emailed when my post got a reply. I think I've fixed the problem. After looking at several schematics on the shop manual I determined that the small hole under the battery was a plug for the power steering pump. On closer examination the whole was threaded, so, after consulting a local mechanic I plugged it with a 3/8 bolt and seal. That seems to have done the trick. I can only guess when the plug was loose when the new fluid was put in, and that the pressure pushed it out. Thanks again for your help.
