4440, 4450 and 4455 use the overdrive 2 speed because the changed the final drive ratio to reduce the stress on the trans and used the overdrive 2 speed to keep the ground speeds the same as the other tractors. All others used the underdrive one.
You can easily pull the clutch valve out and see whether it’s an under or over drive one by looking at the position of the larger planet gear, larger one towards the rear is an overdrive one.
The operating lever is flipped 180 degrees when comparing a 4430 to a 4440 because the clutch/brake functions are swapped.
It’s possible your parts machine had the overdrive gear set, it’s generally done when you want to go a bit faster. It’s commonly done by pullers to split the trans speeds a little faster, I have one setup that way, I run the same gear as the rest of the pack, but I’m about 28% faster gear wise. Makes road gear real fast, like close to 30mph at 2600 rpm.
