I knew better than to try to mow too close to the fences, old crooked hedge posts, steel posts broken off from cattle or hogs rubbing the fence. That extra bale or two got REAL expensive quick if you ruined a tire or tore up a sickle. Only mowed for a couple years with the old Oliver sickle mower. Needed too many expensive wear parts. Neighbor had Dad cut an additional side panel off his 6 ft Brillion rotary mower, week later Dad modified Ours and never used the sickle mower again. The rotary didn't pick up all the hay the front tires drove over but got most of it. Ran 5 mph taking 6 ft cut verses running 6-1/2 mph taking 7 ft swath and having to stop, back-up, and clear sickle bar every couple minutes, maybe took a half hour longer with the rotary to mow 20 acres. Dad looked at a new IH balanced head 9 ft mower, pull type, but was a lot of money just to mow 20 acres of hay 3 times a year. Haybine was out of the question!
