Some corrections and clarifications are needed here. A Class II hitch is only good to 3500 lbs. The 2" square reciever hitch with a 2" or larger ball are normally rated to 5000 lbs. and are Class III. However, it is not unusal to haul a 6000 lb. car trailer with a Class III hitch, 2", 6000 lb. balls are available. The heavier hitches, up to 10,000 lbs. are usually called Class IV. Besides the GVW of the truck you need to look at the GCVW (gross combined vehicle weight) which is the rated total weight of the truck and trailer combined. This information should be in the owners manual. As an example, i have a 85 F250 diesel that's rated at 8600 lbs. GVW and 14,000 lbs. GCVW. If there's not much load on the truck I could probably pull a trailer up to the 10,000 lb. CDL requirement. The main limitation would be the hitch.
