For a simple generator with mechanical regulator, positive/negative ground does not matter as long as you polarize the generator after hooking up the battery.
Yes, I realize there are "positive ground" and "negative ground" regulators, but they are MECHANICAL. They don't know the difference. Like a "6V" vs. a "12V" coil, they are only marked such to make people who don't know anything about electricity feel good that they purchased the right thing.
Positive ground was common and correct up until the late 1950's, but in reality it does not matter.
Look up "John T's Troubleshooting Procedure" to find a nice write-up on how to diagnose and repair generator systems. I keep a printout of it in the manual of every tractor that still has a generator on it.
