You don't want to be producing sparks around especially near the tops of batteries. Therefore, if you make the first connection (if accessible ???) to the INPUT post (NOT post that connects to starter) of a starter solenoid (if tractor has one) orrrrrrrrrr if that's not where you can get to it, to the + battery post that has the big cable leading down to the starter solenoid. Then make the last - jumper connection to iron frame near the starter far away from the batteries .
This if for a NEG ground tractor
The big series tie cable (joins the two 6 volt batteries in series) attaches to the + one battery, the grounded one, and the - of the other. Think of the two sixes in series as a 12 volt battery, first battery has its - to frame ground, then big tie cable from its + to - of the other battery, then the + of the other second battery has the big cable down to starter solenoid.
Same caution applies, you don't want sparks near the top of the truck battery.

He got this wild idea that we should get a convoy of AC tractors and drive them from Charlotte, Michigan 105 miles to LaGrange, Indiana.
