Starting diesel engine

When one is setting the throttle for a cold deisel start which is best a little fuel or more fuel? The one start I made reciently took a whole can of starter fluid.The tractor does still have summer fuel and I now have a can of winter fuel to replace it. The other question:what is the effect of too much starting fluid?
