And yes it is all trial and error with the new parts in hand. Put it together, check, take it apart. Add / subtract shims, put it together, check, take it apart. The first time you might say wow this will take me forever. After a couple of times you'll be doing it in the matter of minutes.
There is skill involved in setting pinion and ring gears. Preloads and backlash are pretty straight forward. Depth is another thing. You can have preloads and backlash correct, and still be way off on depth. You need to accurately evaluate each time to get it correct. Now with that being said, it's not a car driving at highway speeds.
BUT before you go to far, the biggest question of all .....
Why did it blow up in the first place? If due to say wrong tire size in 4 wheel drive, you may be doing it all over again, sooner than you want. Not to mention the cost of parts. You really want to answer this question first.
