Alternative engines, power sources

What kind of alternative powersources were used in older tractors? And were there any unconventional engine designs, such as radials, rotaries, "barrel" designs that used something other than a crankshaft to convert "back and forth" motion into rotation? The aviation industry tried many different engine theories, before the jet engine took over. I think IH worked with a fuel cell tractor in the '50s, and Ford may have experimented with a gas turbine. Any others?
