Years ago, we got a puppy for my wife. Might as well call it a rescue; the poor thing was the runt and probably weaned too early, as well. The people we got her from were probably going to put her down if we didn't take her.
When young, that terrier mix could jump 4 feet high from standing still. Oodles of energy. As she aged, that energy faded quickly; by the time she was 10, she resembled nothing more than a dust mop.
That was the sweetest, most loving dog we ever owned, but she was, as the saying goes, dumber than a box of rocks. She couldn't get out of her own way, was terrified of almost everything, and, when she somehow accidentally got off her lead, would cower down and whimper until somebody put her back on it.
We loved that dog, and she loved us, but, were she human, she would have been profoundly mentally retarded. That mattered to us not one tiny bit!
