I was working prt time for a big construction company , mowing the grass , cleaning the offices and shop snow removal in winter and on Saturdays my boss was teaching me how to run the BIG tonka toys out behind the main shop . when in the main shop cleaning and sweeping i was watchen the Mechanic's , welders and machinists work . Like the old welder i always watched , the one day while watching him he flipped his hood up and hit the hood i was wearing and looked at me and said Son ya ain't ah going to learn watchen ya learn by doing so set your Arres down and try ,I'll let ya know what your doing wrong . I learned how to burn rod and it was not long before i could out weld my metal shop teacher , up hill down hill flat and over head and know what rod to use for the job. I had a vary well working knowledge of how to run a crawler from and early age working on my uncles farm BUT these tonka toys were a lot bigger as old John started me out on a D 6 then up to D 7's and 8 's Hyd and cable blades , Then it was on to pans . then into cable shovels and cranes . By 16 i could run everything and we went from part time to considered FULL time and like every full time employee i got a company truck and my first operating engineers book . I was the first kid at my highschool to have all my classes in the morning and go to work in the afternoon . I was making a man' wages and this allowed me to have things other kids did not have . Daddy did NOT buy me my first car i did Mom may have bought me my new clothes but with my money . dad did not have to slip me a 20 to go out on a date . I learned more form the OLD guys then i ever learned in school. Keep your eyes open and your mouth shut , if you have a question then speak up and ask. Yep many of them OLD guys never finished High school but they were the guys that helped BUILD this country and were vary wise .
