It'd be hard to take somebody's word for it when they were not involved in the work done, and is now (was) selling it. But the tractor looks to be torn apart pretty good already, and it wouldn't take to much more dis-assembly and investigating to see if the work claimed done, actually was. That is, (if) you are really doubting what this guy said.
Personally, I don't get to picky about drivetrain when I'm getting a non runner back running again. If it's got issues there, that can be dealt with later if needed when the tractor is back running again.
Some people on here think a superb professional mechanic job should be carried out on all projects. They apparently haven't worked on projects with no dollars to spend. And you about got to be a little bit that way considering the re-sale value on most of these rigs don't warrant getting spent money back.
