Dick, Basically, a 12 v. charger would charge a 6 volt battery, just at a higher amperage charge rate. The danger is, if its a super heavy charger and does not have current limiting, the charge rate, if too high, can warp the plates in the 6 v. battery if on an extended time at a high rate. Actually, overcharging and possibly plate warping is harder on a battery than undercharging it. If its a wimpy trickle charger, it would probably never hurt the 6 v battery. I just wouldn't put a heavy 12 v charger on a 6 volt battery and leave it on a long time unattended. If it outgases the battery and it boils over bad, the rate is too fast and its hard on the battery. As far as adding a resistor, the power (watts) rating would have to be very high (probably 50 watts or greater) or else youll just burn up the resistor. Its not a good idea is my bottom line answer, although Ive done it but am aware of the problems to watch out for. John T in Indiana jmn50@msn.com
