John T, I have read many of your posts on electrical and agree with all of them. However, you were right the first time. The generator on the IH's (early) has a cutout relay and the generator has a third brush. The light switch with field resistance control is provided to regulate charging rate. The generator is grounded through the light switch. The light switch MUST be grounded to the cover and the cover to the box and the box to the steering support post (ie frame.) (I have seen "grounding" wires attached the "box" mounting screws to overcome poor grounding). The light switch has 4 positions. L,H,D, & B (D & B are dim and bright lights.) L position is approx 1/2, charging rate of H position, and is achieved by the use of the resistor inside the oval box. In H position, the field is fully grounded to the frame, thus output of the generator is whatever is set by the third brush. An easy check is to directly ground the F term on the gen. This will indicate if there is a gounding problem in the light switch circuit. If the gen charges, it will show on a working ammeter, if not gen problem. Hope you can make sense of this.
