I have a Woods. It's completely self-contained, with it's own pump and reservoir. Fit's any 3-point hitch. I can put it on or take in off in 10 minutes, less on a good day.

Mine is a 6.5 foot reach with a 16" bucket, mounted on a 20 horse JD compact diesel (750). I've had it for 10 years, and it's done everything I've ever asked of it, with only minor problems. On a backhoe, you have to consider things like hoses and cylinder seals consumables, and plan to replace them as they wear out. I've had to weld on it twice, both times due to severe abuse rather than any fault of the equipment.

I'd buy another Woods in a second. Other manufacturers are out there, like Kelley and Bush Hog to name a couple.

I like the self contained hydraulics, faster, more efficient, less wear and tear on the tractor. I'm not sure where I stand on the subframe vs. 3-point mount issue. I haven't had any troubles with my 3-point, but the idea that the subframe spreads the stresses out to avoid damaging the tractor is attractive to me. If I were going to use a hoe any bigger than the one I have (which is relatively small as hoes go) I'd sure look hard at the subframe types. Takes a little longer to put them on, but I suspect it's worth it in the long run.

Today's Featured Article - Gatherin of the Orange - by Rick Nikolich. In July of 1998 I was talking to fellow Allis Chalmers collector Mike Schilling about the annual "Gathering of The Orange" AC show coming up in August of 1999. He got this wild idea that we should get a convoy of AC tractors and drive them from Charlotte, Michigan 105 miles to LaGrange, Indiana. ... [Read Article]
