Definitely do some homework before messing around with hydraulic systems, especially if you've never done it before. You will need a good working knowledge of the various types of pumps, valves, actuators (motors and cylinders), lines and so forth. The speed of a hydraulic motor is dependent on the volume of oil flowing to it if it is a fixed displacement motor. Variable displacement motors can use moving swashplates to control the displacement of the pumping elements and thus the speed of the motor. Pumps also come in both styles, as well. If you plan to use these motors as drive units for your creation, you will basically be creating a hydrostat, with either a variable pump or motor to control speed. The JD FOS manual mentioned will give you an excellent foundation of knowledge to build on. You may still want to consult with someone that has a good working knowledge of hydraulics during your project. Hydraulics are perfectly safe if used correctly, but they can hurt you in a hurry if you don't watch yourself. Hydraulic oil injected into the skin is not pretty and is life-threatening if not dealt with quickly and correctly. Good luck with your project.
