I don't recall the design but believe the shifter rails are equiped with detent balls and are spring loaded.This prevents the rails from freely sliding which can allow getting in to more than one gear selection at one time. Check the springs and balls.Also check to see that the lock screws that attach the shifter forks to the rails are tight and safety wires are tight and secure.
