Case shifter rod building up

The shifter rod on my Case 400 is worn and I was wondering what I should use to build it up. I thought about hardfacing rod but is it necessary? I am a pretty good welder in stick and mig and this tractor needs to work. Thanks! P.S. My ag and shop teacher said that a 6013 rod would work fine. ??????
