Back in the early 70's we had a ford riding mower, about 12 hp, with hydrostatic, it would pick up a little speed downhill but I wouldn't call it freewheeling. It just had a single lever, the farther forward you pushed it, the faster it went. Pull back for reverse. I never had to use the brakes, the hydro drive would act as a brake. That mower worked for years with little maintenance, and the hydro drive was never serviced and never caused a moment's problem.
