Several years ago, my wife took me to her office Christmas bash, and introduced me to an older lady, one of her co-workers. That lady wanted me to meet her husband, saying "You two have something in common! You're both woodworkers!"

I used to teach industrial arts, and I do a bit of hobby-woodworking from time to time. When I shook the old fella's hand he looked at mine, and said "Why you've still got all your fingers! How long you been workin' with wood?"

As I answered, I noticed that he was missing three fingers on one hand, and two on the other along with part of a thumb! Figuring this was some old cabinet maker that had operated for years with pre-OHSA equipment, I said "About 20 years! Any how about you?"

He said, "TWO years!" Then he proceeded to tell me that two fingers were eaten by a jointer, the end of the thumb by a router (WHILE CHANGING A BIT!) and the other fingers were cut off with in a tablesaw accident! I'm standing there speechless, and he asks "Do you know where I can get a good deal on a big bandsaw?" I recovered enough to to tell him I didn't know where he could get a good deal, and that I wasn't sure he really needed one!

Today's Featured Article - Gatherin of the Orange - by Rick Nikolich. In July of 1998 I was talking to fellow Allis Chalmers collector Mike Schilling about the annual "Gathering of The Orange" AC show coming up in August of 1999. He got this wild idea that we should get a convoy of AC tractors and drive them from Charlotte, Michigan 105 miles to LaGrange, Indiana. ... [Read Article]
