For the most part, it is very good road. My son and I drove it in March 3 years ago and found that, at least at that time of year, there was almost no traffic. Sometimes we would go for an hour without seeing another vehicle. We were able to drive very fast most of the time.

Lots of the road is very remote from anything. I would not drive it without everything being in tip-top shape, as probably you would have to wait a long time for help. I also would suggest carrying some extra fuel. When we went through, many of the gas stops listed in the Milepost were closed and no one was around. Once we got really worried that we would run out of gas, but finally found a station open. This might not be as much of a problem closer to summer. I would expect the fuel prices to be really steep! I would also carry plenty of food and water, just in case.

You need to watch out for wildlife that might be on the road, but generally you can see for quite a long way in the mostly open country. Hitting a moose would really ruin your trip. We saw a lot of them, as well as some other smaller animals.

The scenery, especially in the Yukon and into Alaska is spectacular! And if you go toward Anchorage, you pass right by an active glacier that is only a couple hundred feet off the highway.

The trip takes at least several days if everything goes well. One of the nights we could not find any place to stay (all rooms were full), so we had to sleep in the car, which we had not planned to do. It was way below zero, and we had to run the engine all night to keep warm. If I ever take the road again, I hope it will be in a motorhome or camper.

Ours was a fun and interesting trip. Hope you enjoy yours.

Today's Featured Article - An Old-Time Tractor Demonstration - by Kim Pratt. Sam was born in rural Kansas in 1926. His dad was a hard-working farmer and the children worked hard everyday to help ends meet. In the rural area he grew up in, the highlight of the week was Saturday when many people took a break from their work to go to town. It was on one such Saturday in the early 1940's when Sam was 16 years old that he ended up in Dennison, Kansas to watch a demonstration of a new tractor being put on by a local dealer. It was an Allis-Chalmers tractor dealership, ... [Read Article]
