when we had 6 volt trucks and straight 8 Buick cars we used 8 volts when the 6 volt battery died because the 8 was about the same price and did a wonderful job. I never set a regulator up any and never had any problem with cranking as long as the engines were 1/2 way tuned up. If the starter was dragging I would get a set of bushings for $1 and a new set of brushes was about $4. For $5 to $6 the starter was rebuilt. Some folks don't realize they can still rebuild a generator or starter either one for $10 or less today.
