Was raised at a JD dealer shop, what we used to do was after we got everything removed along with the back housing, and had the gears ready to come off the axles, we removed the axle/gear castellated nut,installed a regular non slotted nut then we drove a metal log splitting wedge between the 2 axle gear nuts and it always popped them loose for us. Then take the axle out and DON'T let gear roll out on your foot! LGD
