A single phase motor will work just fine, may be larger for the same horsepower. But it will have to nearly stop before reversing. The three phase motor can be reversed while running at full speed (but its hard on it). The wiring for reversing the single phase motor is different. It takes swapping the connections of the start winding for reversing. The three phase motor swaps two line leads for reversing. You can use a phase convertor, or a variable speed electronic drive which is often more cost effective these days. Gerald J.
